ICT Terminology and Domain Names


What does this terminology mean?



Domain name: The thing at the end of the address like ".com" and ".gov".

URL: It stands for "Universal Resource Locator". It is the address for a webpage


HTTP: Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol". It transfers text and information between browsers and servers.


WWW: Stands for "World Wide Web".


Import: Import means to receive information such as images or text on to a device or program such as a computer or USB flash drive.


Export: The opposite of importing, it means to send information to another device.

.com: Used by a company 

.co: Used by co-operations 


.org: Used by organisations  


.gov: Used by the Government 


.ed/edu: Used by education sites or schools 


.ac: Used by academies 


.net: Used by a network
